Smart Food Waste Recycling
Project Introduction
For many years, Endeavour Environmental Education Foundation has actively developed a variety of community-based food waste recycling programmes. The latest initiative funded by Environment and Conservation Fund, is “Smart Foodwaste Recycling by Electric Vehicle in North District Phase II”. This programme deploys electric collection vehicles equipped with smart food waste bins to provide regular mobile recycling services across villages, local markets (including restaurants in Luen Wo Hui and Shek Wu Hui), and schools to facilitate food waste collection and reduction at the community level.
Another ongoing project, also funded by Environment and Conservation Fund, is “Pilot Project for Food Waste Recycling in Shopping Centre and University through the Use of the Food TranSmarter”. In collaboration with several shopping malls and a university in Tuen Mun and Kwai Chung — including Lingnan University, H.A.N.D.S (Oi Ting Commercial Complex), Shek Lei Shopping Centre, and Kwai Shing East Shopping Centre. The programme converts food waste into slurry for delivery to government food waste processing facilities, where it is transformed into renewable energy and compost.
This innovative food waste treatment technology not only enhances waste management efficiency but also significantly reduces the challenges, costs, and carbon emissions associated with the long-distance transportation of solid food waste.
